    Writing Lesson

    Oil by Svetlana Shorey (24in. x 20in.)
"This oil painting came to life during one of our paint-outs with the First Coast Plein Air Painters group at Walter Jones Historical Park, Mandarin, Jacksonville. While this Park offers immense scenic sites that would be great to paint, my eyes and heart were captivated by the life-size bronze sculptures situated beside the beautifully restored 1898 schoolhouse. The sculptor Brenda Councill masterfully portrayed a teacher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and two child laborers whom she might have taught in Mandarin during and after the Civil War. Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, played a significant role in founding a school for African American children in Mandarin, Jacksonville."

    New Old Fort Mose

    Oil by Svetlana Shorey (28in. x 24in.)
"I was deeply inspired to paint "Fort Mose". Its recently rebuilt sturdy wooden structure is now full of vitality, yet conveys a rich history, especially as the first legally sanctioned free Black settlement established in 1738. While working with oils and a thickening paste medium, I was very pleased with how the painting was progressing and enjoyed shaping the elements in the foreground."

  • The Parade

    The Parade

Oil by Luther Steven Walker (14in. x 14in.)
"This painting functions as a Sharpe, political and social commentary, pointing directly to the massive influence, wealth, and systemic power wielded by Donald Trump and Elon Musk. The crowd can be interpreted as the collective psyche of a mass movement – people swept up, ungrounded, and operating under a shared chaotic impulse. The yellow path is reminiscence of a yellow brick road leading to an illusion of power. Ultimately the peace treats the declaration not as a dead piece of parchment, but as a living fracturing reality. The challenges, the viewer to look past the idea of the 1776 act and confront the dizzy mechanisms of power shaping our presence society."

  • Collecting Freedoms: Project 2025

    Collecting Freedoms: Project 2025

Oil by Luther Steven Walker (17in. x 14in.)
"The declaration of independence, boldly assured that all individuals are endowed with certain unalienable rights, chief among them being life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It establishes the foundational American promise that the government exists to secure these freedoms not to seize them. Project 2025 collecting freedoms serves as a Sharpe contemporary satirical critique that founding promise under threat. By transforming an abstract political manifesto into a literal utilitarian garbage truck systematically rounding up and locking away fundamental liberty such as women’s rights in voting rights the painting visualizes thefragile nature of our constitutional guarantees. It forces the viewer to confront a chilling reversal of our historical ideas, the reality where the machinery of power is used to collect and contain the very freedoms, the nation was born to protect."
