    "Contemplative is my attempt to show one aspect of the Great Blue Heron’s duality—an elegant predator that moves with grace yet strikes like a snake. I rendered the background loosely and a bit more graphically, allowing the heron to emerge as the focal point with a bit more precise, sculptural form. The contrast between the two creates a visual hierarchy that mirrors the bird’s nature: beautiful on the surface, deadly in purpose."

    The Light is Fading

    "The focus of The Light is Fading is value control — a large, soft-edged cloud mass set against a low, warm sky, with the horizon line kept quiet to let the sky dominate. Reflected light in the tidal pools and creek was built up gradually to match the sky’s value without competing with it. The palette stays restrained and close in temperature, letting subtle shifts in the clouds carry the mood rather than color contrast. Experimenting with degrees of tonalism, and the push and pull of looseness and detail."

    Lowcountry Sunrise

    "Low-country Sunrise explores the color shift from a saturated, warm sky into the cooler greens and blues of the marsh below. The winding tidal creek was placed to lead the eye from foreground to horizon, while the live oak and Spanish moss on the right anchor the composition and frame the sky’s color temperature. Layers of transparent glazes over opaque underpainting were used to achieve the sky’s luminosity without losing the density of the marsh grass in shadow."
