Exhibit Judge: Patrick Mahoney
Pat Mahoney is an artist and art restorer and conservator based in Orange Park, Florida. Educated at the University of North Florida, he has cultivated a lifelong passion for capturing scenes of tranquility through art. Since 1965, Pat has created beautifully hued, meticulously detailed landscapes and still lifes in oil on canvas. Today, he is recognized as one of North Florida’s accomplished representational artists. Firmly rooted in realism, his work is distinguished by subtle undercurrents of emotion that bring depth and quiet resonance to each painting.
Judge's Statement
I was very confident in my overall selection of ten out of a hundred plus entries.What was difficult was determining the order to place these amazing works of art in.So many could have been “Best in Show” on any given day. This has been a very difficult process, but I feel that sticking with my first impression is usually best.I looked for visual impact, imagination, confidence with the medium, knowledge of the subject and how the subject was presented.This association has a large and talented membership which makes for an exceptional show every time. Enjoy!
Best In Show – “Burrowing Owls” by Gwen Mehler #46I was immediately drawn to this interesting imagery of six owls posing for the viewer. The design of the root system unifies the owls in a surreal way. The treatment of the owls, eyes and feathers, are reflected in the circles and “dot n’ dash” pattern that is designed into the background. This is a well thought out, well executed, creative painting of these beautiful little burrowing creatures.
Alice Alger Most Creative Award – “Revelation 19:17” by Mark Sun #72This a beautiful visual interpretation of this Bible verse. The birds in flight are backed by an effective background with a palette that blends up from cool to warm. The placement of the white birds and the white lettering creates a depth to the piece. A successful contrast is achieved between the bold brushwork and the fine linework. This elongated composition is ideal and the choice of frame and matte emphasizes the light airiness of the piece.
First Place–“The Shape of Wind” by Jillian Hampson #105This is such a graceful, sweeping image that perfectly illustrates its title “The Shape of Wind. The delicate brushwork shows command of the medium and the important role that value alone can play. This is a well-drafted monochromatic oil painting that is a treat to the eyes with these flowing shapes around a beautifully rendered figure. The stark black background leaves nothing to distract you from the subject.
