Collograph Etching with Watercolor by Debra Mixon
(12in. x 16in.)

In my work, I heed a deep-rooted calling to bear witness to the native environment of the region that I know and love. In executing the work, I seek to integrate my experience as an artist and printmaker with a naturalist’s eye for flora and fauna. Nature and our relationships to nature serve as entry points to contemplate transitions, boundaries, connections, sense of place, time and identity. My current focus is the technique of collagraph etching, a printmaking method that enables me to use non-toxic materials. I craft plates from simple mat board and packaging materials, cutting into and using a variety of materials to build up the surface. At the same time, I avoid the chemicals typically associated with the traditional etching of copper plates. Watercolor complements the etching and brings color into the work. This low-tech approach feels very appropriate to convey the stories and the specialness of the environments they rely on that populate my work.
