Blue Springs Manatee Family

Saggar Fired Clay by Shirley Suski
(14in. x 12in.)

Christmas Day I visited Blue Springs State Park and was lucky enough to see these unusual gentle creatures in the flowing aquatic springs. My goal was to share the peaceful quality of the springs and manatees which were the inspiration for this clay sculpture. I used slabs of raku clay over balled up paper to form the manatees, sculpted the plants as a base then applied a colored terra sig and burnished. I wrapped the sculptures in an aluminum foil saggar with oxides and organic materials randomly thrown in, then fired to 1800 degrees F I hope I have captured this serene moment in the springs for you.
