"When chooing not to vote, a voter is making a vote. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 174 million people were registered to vote in the 2024 presidential election. Of those, 154 million people (65.3%) voted. This means about 20 million registered voters did not vote–roughly 11.5% of registered electorate. A post-election survey found that 59% of registered voters reported voting, while 41% did not.
When individuals choose not to vote, they are contributing to a lower overall voter turnout. If many people abstain from voting, the remaining votes can disproportionately favor one candidate over another, which may result in a less qualified candidate winning."
