“A Band of Angels Comin After Me
When walking the beach and looking for shells, I come across oyster shells, with their different shapes and sizes. For some reason, I see heads (often with open mouths), wings, bodies, and yes even halos, maybe because when we first moved here it was around Christmas time, my first Christmas in Florida. I created my first angels as tree ornaments that year, but I could not stop seeing or making angels. I haven’t really been a strong believer in angels in the past. But we’ve lost three close family members in the past two years, they died way too soon. Our 24-year-old grandson, our 52-year-old nephew, and a 69-year-old husband and brother-in-law. Our grandson died 2 years ago which still grieves me, and my sisters only child and husband died in the past 6 months. I never experienced this kind of loss and grief growing up. I want to believe that these dear ones are angels, looking out for us. I also feel my own mortality more closely. The title of this piece comes from an old spiritual, “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”:
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.
- I looked over Jordan, and what did I see?
Coming for to carry me home?
A band of angels, coming after me,
Coming for to carry me home.
- If you get there before I do,
Coming for to carry me home,
Tell all my friends I’m coming too,
Coming for to carry me home.
- I’m sometimes up and sometimes down,
Coming for to carry me home,
But still my soul feels heavenly bound,
Coming for to carry me home.
This is a kinetic sculpture. If you take a hold of the heart charms on the “Canopy”, you can spin the angels…(Gently of course!) “
