A Flagler Halo for Saint Gregory

$595.00

Acrylic by Veronica Haddock
(24in. x 36in.)

“This painting represents a little linear perspective, in the background of the “halo”. It also represents a visual perspective/view from below the face looking up toward the ceiling. It struck me that when my son stood below the ceiling of the Ponce De Leon Hotel/Flagler College rotunda, that it looked like he had a halo around his head. Always willing to be silly, I snapped a photo of “Saint Gregory”.

As always when working on a painting, there is a lot of time to ponder what is being painted, and what it means. I couldn’t help but think of the beautiful building and ceiling of the once Ponce De Leon Hotel and its founder, Henry Flagler. However beautiful it is, that beauty is marred by the history and stories of Flagler’s wealth and his less than stellar means of achieving some of that wealth. For me, the opulent greed and poor ethics of those who accumulate wealth at the expense of others mars the beauty of “all that is gold.” Perhaps that’s what the campy “Saint Gregory” represents. Beauty that shouldn’t be taken so seriously that it causes one to think it’s ok to treat others as “less than.”“
