Cool Water

$100.00

Photography by Sheryl West
(21.5in. x 17.5in.)

I capture and document scenes or images that evoke emotion or thought. I make photographs that give life to the past in “off the map” neighborhoods and byways that are forgotten in time. As a visual artist and photographer, I am a shadow hunter who appreciates history, culture, architecture, and textures. My focus is about creating a composition that often stimulates a meaningful memory box image.

I consider myself an intuitive photographer, and my process often begins as an unplanned “walk about” on area streets, alleys and byways. My process can develop as a “hit the ground running” adventure, during an “off the cuff” travel opportunity. I focus on intuition and trust to make a meaningful image. I do utilize my digital camera when creating a documentary video, but I am a long time devotee and admirer of 35mm film, such as black and white Ilford or Fuji, Kodak Gold or Porta. I love opening up those little boxes of magic, and enjoy experimenting with 35mm 800-1000 speed film. Sometimes, I never know what I’m going to “freeze frame” through my lens eye and that is acceptable too. Film is reported to be the first photographic medium dating back to the early 1800’s, and in my opinion is still relevant today for what I’m currently doing. I learned as a child to sit back, be still and observe, with the intention to see with an eye and heart that remains open to new points of view.

I want my photograph to arouse the viewer’s curiosity enough to consider new points of view, unique lifestyles, as well as to remember how quickly our environments and lives can change. I hope to inspire the viewer to pause and reflect on life’s simple pleasures with gratitude, wonder and delight.
