Oil by Svetlana Shorey
(24in. x 20in.)

“This oil painting came to life during one of our paint-outs with the First Coast Plein Air Painters group at Walter Jones Historical Park, Mandarin, Jacksonville. While this Park offers immense scenic sites that would be great to paint, my eyes and heart were captivated by the life-size bronze sculptures situated beside the beautifully restored 1898 schoolhouse. The sculptor Brenda Councill masterfully portrayed a teacher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and two child laborers whom she might have taught in Mandarin during and after the Civil War. Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, played a significant role in founding a school for African American children in Mandarin, Jacksonville.”
