The Promise in the Pane

$500.00

Mixed, Photo-encaustic by M. Kathleen Warren
(24in. x 12in.)

Our Declaration of Independence states that “all men are created equal” with the unalienable right to liberty, but we see a gap between their words and reality which was only bridged decades later. In the background photograph for the piece, I saw the stark contrast between the lives of those without liberty and the lives of those they served who lived in warm light and comfort. The left side collage, including letter excerpts from my great-great-grandfather who was a plantation owner in SC, hints at what this denial of liberty meant for some. It was only during and after the Civil War in the USA that the right to liberty, denied to so many, was formally granted to these people by the Emancipation Proclamation.
