“**Unmasked**
When people look at me, they may see only a Chinese girl. In *Unmasked*, a young woman wears an ornate Peking opera headdress, the identity others recognize first. One eye looks out through the painted mask, the way I sometimes see others through the role I am given. But her hand slips the mask aside, and her other eye looks out unhidden. I see the world through both: through my mask, and through the real me beneath it. This painting is about that double perspective, being seen through one lens while seeing the world through two, and about my search for my true self.“
