Exhibit Judge: Samuel Aye-Gboyin
Samuel Aye-Gboyin is an interdisciplinary artist whose work synthesizes technology and culture through photography, video, animation, installation, and design. Currently an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, his practice explores themes of commerce, migration, globalization, and hybridity, particularly within the African diaspora. Drawing from his lived experience as an immigrant, Aye-Gboyin examines how power structures and material conditions shape the realities of immigrant life, using digital media and found objects to construct immersive environments that reflect displacement, identity, and cultural negotiation. Through dynamic elements of movement, color, and sound, his work creates atmospheres of tension and transition that challenge conventional paradigms and invite viewers to reconsider societal norms and the transformative potential of technology. Aye-Gboyin holds an MFA in Art and Technology from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in Graphic Design from Eastern Illinois University, and a bachelor’s degree in Communication Design with a concentration in Animation and Motion Graphics from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.
Judge's Statement:
I approached this exhibition without a theme by using a consistent rubric: craft and execution, concept and clarity, composition, originality and voice, presence, and range of materials. Many submissions were technically strong, so I treated craft as a baseline and made my final distinctions based on clarity of intention, distinct voice, and how the work held up through sustained viewing. For that reason, several more experimental and abstract works rose to the top, not simply because of style, but because their choices felt more purposeful and memorable in the room.Best in Show was selected for its complete integration of concept, composition, and execution, along with a commanding presence. First through fourth place reflect works of exceptional strength that demonstrate confident decision-making and distinct artistic voices. The Most Creative award recognizes the piece that took the most compelling risks through material and approach while remaining cohesive. The honorable mentions acknowledge works that narrowly missed top placement but significantly contribute to the exhibition’s depth through originality, presence, and the range of materials and methods represented.
