“While snorkeling in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, I discovered the ocean held secrets I never imagined. As I dived in, the ordinary world vanished. In its place was a living tapestry of coral gardens—undulating fans, branching structures, and delicate fronds swaying in invisible currents. Fish darted among them, jeweled and electric in their colors: sapphire blue tangs, golden yellow tail snapper, and curious blue striped grunts. Sunlight filtered through in wavering groves, illuminating every scale and ripple. Time lost meaning as I moved through the water, breathing slowly and gazing in amazement.
These images will forever stay with me. For those who could not visit this space, I wanted to share it with them. Each brushstroke felt like an attempt to honor that hidden world, to translate its vividness onto canvas.
Painting became an act of devotion, a way to hold onto the miracle of that glimpse beneath the surface. Even as I layered pigment and adjusted forms, I knew the paintings could never fully contain the life I had witnessed. Yet they also spoke to something larger—the way a place can transform us. Space is not merely background; it is a force that can shift perspective, awaken wonder, and remind us how deeply connected we are to the world around us. Each finished piece was a testament: a reminder that whole universes exist just beyond the veil, waiting patiently for us to look down, to notice, and to be transformed and protected.”
