On Edge Paper Quilling and soft pastels by Christel Fleming (11 3/4in. by 14 3/4in.)
"This on-edge paper quilled portrait captures one of the iconic lion statues standing sentinel at the base of the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine — a powerful symbol of strength, guardianship, and timeless elegance. Gifted to the city by Dr. Andrew Anderson, these marble lions have watched over generations, quietly bearing witness to the rhythm of tides, travelers, and sunsets. Rendered in meticulously layered strips of paper, the lion’s mane and musculature emerge through sculptural texture and shadow. The dimensional quality of on-edge quilling mirrors the carved depth of the original statue, translating stone into paper while preserving its commanding presence. Each coil and contour builds movement into a figure traditionally rooted in stillness, inviting viewers to look closer and experience the interplay of light across surface and form. Behind the lion, soft pastel skies dissolve from warm amber and coral into cool violet and blue — a tribute to St. Augustine’s luminous evening horizons. The sunset does not merely serve as background; it frames the lion as both guardian and witness, standing steadfast between land and sea as day surrenders to night. This piece is part of a four-work sunset collection that includes *Sunset Sentry*, *Charlotte Street Reflections*, and *Sunset Beacon*. Together, the collection explores the architectural and sculptural icons of St. Augustine bathed in the fleeting, transformative light of dusk — moments when history feels both distant and immediate. Through paper — delicate yet resilient — this work honors the enduring spirit of place, reminding us that even the strongest monuments are defined by the light that surrounds them."
