Oil by Megan Welch

"This work reflects the moment of pause before true focus—when the “studio ghosts” begin to fade. Inspired by Philip Guston’s quote, the painting captures the tension between presence and absence, noise and silence. I am caught in an in-between state, waiting for the voices of teachers, peers, critics, and art history to leave the room. Only when they are gone can genuine concentration and intuition take over. The studio becomes both a physical and psychological space, where distraction slowly dissolves and the act of painting turns inward."
