Oil on canvas panel by Leigh Slayden
(20in. x 17in.)
"While on retreat in France, my group was housed in a manor beside an abandoned mill on the river. I could hear the rapids that used to power its wheel to press olives, but the water was hidden by the dense woods. I took the occasion to enlist my trusty sherpa--my husband Russell, an experienced hiker--to lead me on a clamber down the slopes and over stones and ancient roots, following the sound of rushing water. My reward was a long day painting on the rocky shore, the River Orb rushing narrowly past my feet as I completed this piece en plein air."
