  "I started this piece while pregnant with our newest daughter Birdie. I chose two songbirds who are known for their vibrant colors and perched them on coral under the sea instead of branches in trees. Our inability to see or hear our own “underwater” Birdie had no effect on her beauty, just as the beauty of the goldfinch and painted bunting is not dependent on anyone seeing them or hearing their songs."
