March 9, 16, 23, & 30 | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

at the St. Augustine Art Association

Join visiting artist Liz Canali in this 4 week course and explore the wonders of felting!

Dive into the creative world of wet and dry felting in this hands-on, four-week course. Explore a variety of fiber techniques while creating wall hangings, vessels, scarves, bags, felted rock rugs, lights, and more. Beginners will learn essential tools, workspace setup, and foundational methods, while experienced felters can experiment with fresh approaches to familiar techniques. The first two sessions focus on materials and core techniques; the final two weeks are dedicated to guided individual projects. Additional materials may be purchased during the final sessions based on each student’s chosen project.

Course Outline:
Week 1:
Introduction to wet felting wool layout options and wool choices. How to calculate shrinkage and successfully “full” your sample to create a smooth finished piece of felt. Make samples to use for coasters or small wall hangings.

Week 2:
Introduction to 2-D needle felting. Using special barbed needles you’ll learn the way to hold and poke the wool to create a small picture that can be mounted in a 4” embroidery hoop. Experiment with color and needle types and different felting tools.

Weeks 3 & 4:
During the first 2 weeks we’ll talk about your plans for a project(s) and figure out what you need for supplies to create it. Using the fundamentals learned in the first 2 weeks and combining techniques your possibilities are limitless! Have fun and Explore the wonders of felting!

This course is open to artists of all skill levels.

**Materials for the first two sessions are included in the registration fee. Students are responsible for materials for weeks 3 and 4, based on individual project needs.

About the Instructor

Liz Canali has been immersed in the world of art since she was young. She has worked as an elementary art teacher in Hopkinson, MA and then as a jewelry and weaving teacher at Northfield Mt. Hermon School in Northfield, MA. Over time, her art journey brought her into the world of art administration and she took on the position of Director of Leverett Crafts and Arts in Everett, MA, before returning to her roots as a graphic artist.

In search of a non-computer creative outlet, Liz rediscovered fiber arts — especially felt. From wall hanging to accessories and sculpture, Liz’s work has been featured in the American Architectual Digest, Felt — The Australian Magazine for Felting, and Orlando Sentinel. She has exhibited her work throughout New England and Florida — and has won the Best of Show award three different times at the St. Augustine Art Association.
