Slack Tide

Linoleum Block Print on Mulberry Hanji Paper by Cody Thomas
(21in. by 27in.)

“Slack tide is the brief pause between currents, when the water releases direction before turning. This work exists in that same mental interval, the moment awareness loosens from the present and drifts into daydream.
The architectural frame represents the physical world, stable, structured, and grounded in place. Inside it, gravity softens and the boat floats in a space that is neither sky nor water, but perception itself. The figure is not traveling, only suspended in attention as thought quietly replaces surroundings.
The piece reflects how the mind departs from reality without fully leaving it. Observation fades. Memory, imagination, and inner landscape begin to take hold. Like slack tide, it is not movement that defines the moment, but the stillness before direction returns.”
